Focusing on Positivity in Not So Positive Times

Updated: Mar 11, 2021

Well, you've found yourself in a less than positive situation. I get it. It's normal. Take a second to breathe and remember it happens to all of us. Our minds can be our worst enemy sometimes. Don't beat yourself up! Life happens and when it doesn't go according to plan, it's not exactly a good time. We begin to question our purpose and if what we are doing is worth it. I feel this way on occasion, and getting in a funk is the last thing I want to do. What I want to share here is how I approach those feelings and what works for me when trying to get out of a funk.

So... here we go.

One: Address the situation. Do you know what put you in that head space? Write it down. When I write down what brought me to that point, it's easier to avoid it the next time I run into the situation. Tackle it head on and don't let it fester. Understand that the issue isn't as big in real life as it is in our minds, dust yourself off, and let it go.

Two: SELF FREAKIN CARE. For me, that is a good book, a cup of tea, and a long bath. It may seem simple, and that is because.... it is. The act of self care is what we make hard. I think a lot of times we get too caught up or believe we don't deserve time for ourselves. I've said it once and I will say it again.. you cannot take care of others if you do not take care of yourself.

Three: Flip the perspective. When we immediately look at our problems as negative, it's easy to see things from a glass half empty perspective. Instead of allowing ourselves to drown in the negative, flip it. How can you be thankful for what happened? When we approach our issues with a mindset of gratitude, it makes it easier to move on from them. Understand that everything happens for a reason, and although we may not see the reason why at the time, trust the process.

Four: THANK GOD. This should be number one and the first thing we do upon facing trials. Thank God for the process. He knows our hearts better than we ever will, because HE created them. Every single possible thing that happens is not TO us, it's FOR us. Remembering this makes the burden so much less than. Thank God for the closed door, missed opportunity, imperfect moment. It is shaping us for our next. Trust that God never has plans to do us harm, and all of it is for our benefit. Even if you don't understand why yet, one day you will.

Five: Go exercise. Get outside. Do some yoga. JUST GET ACTIVE. Nothing makes me feel as good as when I have endorphins moving. Drink a big ole glass of water and get to sweating. If you have kiddos, exercise with them! James does yoga with me and although it may take a little longer, I enjoy being able to instill in him mindfulness and mental clarity at such a young age.

I hope these help you as much as they do for me! If you have any questions or comments leave them below! Love you guys!

-Britt
